Create Better Display Ads

Newspaper display advertising is a powerful way to advertise your product or service. Combining a well designed display ad with the right statewide to nationwide exposure will produce results.

Display ads in newspapers vary in size, from as small as one square inch up to a full page. They run in just about every section of the newspaper, generally according to the type of product or service being advertised.

A display advertisement is a great tool for getting your message across to potential customers. With this type of advertising, you can take advantage of creative images, fonts and logos to make your ad stand out.

Here are a few tips on how to set your ads apart from the rest.
1) Be Clear

Tell readers right off the bat what it is you are selling. This allows you to target your ad to an audience that would be most interested in your product or service. Having a clear message will invite interested parties to read on and uninterested parties to move on. Being clear also involves the aesthetics of the ad… which brings us to our next point.

2) Use LEGIBLE Fonts

Generally speaking your font size should rarely go below a 10 point font. If it is important enough to be in the ad, it is important enough to be read, so only in rare cases should you have font smaller than 10 point. Also, make sure that the font is an easy to read font. Super-script or fancy fonts may look nice, but for many they are difficult to read. Know your audience and stick to fonts that won’t require any special decoding devices.

3) Use Pictures

“A picture is worth a thousand words.” This is no cliché. Take it for truth. If you have a photo of your product, by all means use it. That is what makes a display ad different from a classified ad, so take advantage of the ability to use visuals. The best visual is a photo or graphic of the product in use. This will give potential customers a glimpse into the future and their life with your product. Nice, isn’t it?

4) Use Bullets

A text heavy ad can sometimes relay the message, blah, blah, blah. Avoid long, descriptive text. Stick to bullet points. Bullet points are a great way to explain your features and benefits without boring readers. Not to mention that because bullet points generally take up less room than a full paragraph or two of text, you can make the text bigger and bolder (making the text more legible… it is like a two for one!)

5) Contact Information

There are some folks that do everything via the web and then some who would prefer human conversation. Supply contact information for both types of people and everyone in between. Giving potential clients options is a good way to ensure that you are making it convenient for them to contact you. If someone is in the middle of something and can’t stop to make a call, don’t lose them! Give them an email address to write to or a website to check out. The more contact information you can supply, the better.
